What the ‘Fiyeli’ is a Fiyeli?

Well, Fiyeli means goat in Amharic, the primary language spoken in Ethiopia. Yup. Goat. Legend has it that nearly 1,200 years ago a goat herder in Ethiopia named Kaldi discovered coffee after he noticed that his goats became super energetic and happy every time they ate berries from a specific bush on his farm. Kaldi had reported his findings to the abbot of the local monastery. Initially the monastery believed both Kaldi and his goats were all possessed and had thrown the berries into the fire. Soon the wonderful smell of roasted coffee filled the room. The roasted coffee berries (commonly known as beans since they look like beans once removed from it’s out skin) were then put into water and created an early version of the dark liquid we’ve all grown to love today.

When do I get my coffee?

We process all orders within 48-72 hours. Shipment transit times will vary depending on where you’re located. Our coffee is shipped out of Los Angeles, CA. Don’t want to risk running out of coffee? We recommend setting up a recurring order and ensuring you’re always stocked with fresh, delicious coffee at all times!

Is this stuff organic?

Give me a ‘Y’, give me a ‘E’, give me a ‘S’, what does that spell? YES! YES! YES! All of our coffee is USDA Certified Organic. This includes our decaf coffee, which is processed using the amazing Swiss Water Process. What’s that? See next question. :)

What is the Swiss Water Process?

Usually to create decaf coffee, the process requires chemicals, which we hate. We want to ensure all of our coffee is processed in a clean, organic fashion and the Swiss Water Process handles this on our behalf. They have their unique process that uses the elements of water, temperature and time to create the best decaf coffee you can find eliminating 99.99% of caffeine!

Why do we recommend whole bean coffee?

The conservation of flavor in coffee is in it’s oils. Those oils evaporate once the coffee is ground, which means the coffee will begin to go stale. The taste of ground coffee begins to fade within just days. Our recommendation is to grind as you drink, but for convenience we would recommend grinding no more than 2-3 days worth of beans at a time. Our coffee bags are also Nitrogen flushed prior to sealing to help further extend their freshness. How does that work? See next question...

You’re not chemists, why are you playing with Nitrogen? Freshness, it’s all about the freshness!

We gotta give it to science for always coming up with natural, safe and clean ways to help with sustainability. Nitrogen flushing our 12oz coffee bags helps further extend the freshness of the coffee beans. This tactic is created by using the Nitrogen like a bouncer at the door of your favorite 70’s disco, not letting anyone in (or really in this case kicking everyone out.) Nitrogen molecules have a larger diameter than oxygen, so they stand guard at the door of the bag’s valve and force out all of the oxygen and block the valve. Think of Nitrogen as Uncle Phil, and Oxygen as Jazzy Jeff!

We do everything on our part to ensure the freshest possible beans make it to your doorstep, but from that point on we really encourage that you take the proper steps on your end to ensure the coffee remains as fresh as possible for you:

  1. Grinding Fresh: Keep in mind, ground coffee recommended shelf life is no more than 2-weeks for optimum flavor. That’s why we always recommend grinding as you make your coffee, or grinding for a few days at a time
  2. Keep your coffee air-tight and sealed. Our beans are shipped in resealable bags, but anything you grind for later should be placed in an air-tight bag or container
  3. PLEASE DO NOT REFRIGERATE OR FREEZE YOUR COFFEE BEANS! Your fridge/freezer is meant for ice cream and food, not for coffee. The best place to keep coffee is in a cool, dark place. Pantry, or cabinet is recommended

Do you accept returns?

Unfortunately due to the perishable nature of coffee, we do not accept returns on the beans unless defective. If your beans arrived with any issues, please contact us at TheHerd@Fiyeli.com.

All other products may be returned or exchanged on a case-by-case basis. We do want to ensure you are happy with your purchase, so please contact us at TheHerd@Fiyeli.com.
